Creating Your Unplanned Pregnancy Plan

As a birth mother, the decision to choose adoption is not an easy one to make on your own. Although placing a baby for adoption may be a difficult choice, we will be there to provide support, including counseling if you would like. We understand how important it is for you to stay healthy and well taken care of, and we are here to support you through your adoption plan. We want to help you customize a plan that you are 100% comfortable with. Counseling and legal representation is provided to you at no cost. We also have many resources to help you during and after the placement of your child.

We provide counseling to you as the birth mother, the birth father if he is interested as well as your family and other children. We want you to have a great support system and we believe that helping others around you understand adoption and what the future brings sets you up for success.

Our agency will provide court approved living expenses for birth mothers who need the help. We can help with expenses such as rent, utilities, food, sundries, and your phone bill. We understand how difficult it is to get back on your feet and return to work after delivering a baby and we want to help you as much as possible. Depending on your State of residence, the amount of court approved expenses may vary.

We will help you find assistance in paying the medical expenses that are a result of your pregnancy and delivery. The portion of your medical expenses that is not covered by private insurance or state funding will be provided by the adoptive family. Your worker is available to help with finding and scheduling prenatal appointments as well as setting up a hospital tour if you are interested. Also available to you is a Lamaze/Birthing Education Coach through our agency. She is available to you and can do private classes to help you feel comfortable and ready for delivery.

We can help you find or apply for housing, and help with paying your rent during your pregnancy and up to four to six weeks after your delivery. We want you to feel safe and secure in your living situation and help provide shelter to you and your family.

Your worker will help you with transportation to your doctor appointments, to pick up your prescription and to take you to any legal representation appointments. They are also available to help with transportation to apply for Medicaid, food stamps, employment or furthering your education. If further assistance is needed, i.e., trips to the grocery store or a ride to work, your worker is happy to help arrange that for you or provide a bus pass if you choose.

We are partnering with Lifetime Healing

After years and years of grief, loss and depression, one woman started to write and share her experiences and overtime a small community of birth mothers and friends gathered and started to share a voice. That group started to grow into one of most respected online support groups. What they discovered was a powerful connection of understanding, love and hope for healing. This was such a foreign concept and perspective given the tradition, shame, generation gaps and society ignorance on the topic of adoption. It was refreshing and craved nation wide.

Adoption Choices of Colorado has partnered with Lifetime Healing, LLC to provide Post Placement Support Groups for Birth Mothers! We are excited to be giving birth mothers support after placement whether they have placed 3 weeks ago, 13 months ago, or 25 years ago. We are offering a monthly support group in Golden on the first Thursday of each month and in Colorado Springs the second Tuesday of each month! For more information check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/adoptionchoicesofcolorado/ or contact Christy Ikeler at 720-371-1099.

Lifetime Healing, LLC. is a result of this small group of women. After supporting countless women all over the country we took all our of our experience and education and created the first ever post placement curriculum to build lasting and concrete support groups for women that choose to place their children for adoption. In doing so, we are holding the professionals accountable in standing with the birth mothers for life. If they are going to stand with them in the destruction than ethics would assume that they stand with them in the rebuild. We are the standard for ethical post placement care for birth mothers.

Ashley Mitchell, owner of Lifetime Healing, set out to seek increased care, understanding, and resources for birth mothers. For almost a decade, Ashley has been one of the most consistent and sought after birth mother voices in the nation. Well known for her vulnerability and transparency in adoption, her story has touched the hearts of countless members of the adoption community

COMMON QUESTIONS
Why choose adoption?
When facing an unplanned pregnancy, adoption is a positive alternative and one that we encourage you to consider along with your other options. There is no set structure for an adoption, instead we work to ensure that your adoption plan fits your wants and needs as a birth mother and is in the best interest both you and the baby.
Who will help me to understand my decision to place my child for adoption?
The decision to choose adoption is not an easy one to make on your own. Although it may be a difficult and painful choice, we will be there to provide support, including counseling if you would like.
Can I choose the adoptive family of my child?
Yes, you have the option of approving the parents who will be adopting your baby. Each family makes a picture profile, which is a mini-scrap book that tells you about their lives. The profiles we will present to you are filled with photos of the family, their vacations, their home and lots more. It will also include a “Dear Birth Mother” letter that addresses other frequently asked questions such as their likes and dislikes, hobbies, etc…
How do I know the adoptive family will provide a safe environment in which to raise my child?
All of our prospective adoptive parents go through extensive background checks. Case workers meet them in their homes to interview them. The couples are required to provide a State Bureau of Investigation report and a child abuse clearance report as well as birth certificates, a copy of their marriage license, physician’s reports that include HIV test results, etc… Adoptive families are carefully screened.
Can the agency help me with living expenses if I am unable to work?
The agency will provide court approved living expenses to birth mothers who need the help. We understand how difficult it is to get back on your feet and return to work after delivering a baby.
Where is your agency located?
Adoption Choices of Colorado is headquartered in Golden but you don’t need to come to us! Our caseworkers will come to you. We work with birth mothers across the state of Colorado and match with adoptive families across the country. So whether you are looking for adoption agencies in Denver, adoption agencies in Colorado Springs, adoption agencies in Northern Colorado or in any other location in Colorado, we can work with you to develop a successful adoption plan.

Ways to Cope with Birth Mother Grief

Going through moments of birth mother grief is one of the biggest reasons you will have regrets. You begin to think you will not be there for your child. Technically, you will not be there to watch your child grow, but you are the reason your child will grow and develop with an adoptive family. With the benefits that come with your adoption plan, you can join our monthly support counseling services.

You will be connected to an adoption counselor and get help to manage your mental health. Not only will you have the opportunity to speak with an adoption counselor, but you will also share your experiences with other birth mothers. The more you open up about your fears and struggles in your adoption journey, your confidence will grow.

Choosing an Open Adoption For Your Adoption Plan

Do you have regrets about never being able to see your child? Even though you will not legally have custody of your child after the adoption is finalized, you can still maintain contact. You may want to consider an open adoption. An open-adoption adoption allows you to have as much contact with the adoptive family and your child. This includes sending letters, pictures, messaging through social media, video chats, and family visits. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the adoptive family and check on your child periodically. You can also begin to develop a relationship with your child. Therefore, not all will be lost. You may want a semi-adoption if you prefer to have a mediated, secure contact through an adoption agency or third party.

Adoption Choices of Colorado Encourages You To Explore Your Solutions With Adoption

If you remain uncertain about adopting adoption, seek further advice from your specialist. You may need to weigh out your pros and cons in exploring your adoption options. Choosing adoption with a private adoption Colorado agency doesn’t need to terminate the relationship between you and your child. On the contrary, adoption expands parental love from a child’s mother to a loving adoptive family.

Different Adoption Plans

The first thing that is necessary to consider is the adoption plan you want to choose for your child. There are multiple adoption options. The three most common plans are open, closed, and semi-open. An open adoption plan is when the contact information of the birth mother is shared with her child and the adoptive family. In this type of adoption, the child will be able to contact their mother. Mothers who choose this adoption plan wish to be present in their child’s life and want to be able to contact them.

Some mothers may choose to eliminate contact with their children, which is also totally okay! In a closed adoption plan, none of the mother’s contact information is shared with the child. This means that there won’t be any contact between the mother and the child.

The third and final adoption plan we can consider is a semi-open one. In this adoption plan, you will still be able to contact your child without revealing any private information. This means that you will have full control over the number of times you want to contact your child because they won’t have any of your contact information.

How do I choose the right adoption plan?

Choosing the perfect adoption plan is not only crucial for the birth mother but is also important for your child. There are myriads of factors to consider when thinking about the right adoption plan.

  1. The amount of contact you wish to have with your child
  2. The adoptive family you choose and whether they want you to contact your child
  3. What’s best for your child

Additionally, here at Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Colorado, we will provide you with our insight. Moreover, you will be able to talk to our counselors, and they will help you choose the right adoption plan for your family.

Can I choose a different adoption plan during my pregnancy?

We understand that this is a very difficult decision to reach. This is why it’s perfectly okay for you to change the adoption plan as many times as you want during your pregnancy. As long as you haven’t signed any legal documents, you will have full freedom to choose a different adoption plan if you change your mind.

Going through an adoption process may be stressful and mentally draining, which is why at Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Colorado, we provide the fundamental mental and financial support you need.

Fortunately for me I was no stranger to adoption. I was adopted and my mother, my sister and my aunt have all placed a baby for adoption. It didn’t make my decision any easier, I was just more familiar with the process. I knew a lot more clearly than some, that placing your baby for adoption doesn’t mean giving up on your baby, it just means you want a better life for your baby.
