For hopeful adoptive parents, waiting even one week for a child can seem like an eternity. It’s easy to get impatient as the weeks turn into months, but don’t give up when you’re waiting to adopt a baby.

Please, don’t give up.

It’s Not as Long as It Seems

Time is relative. Just like a child waiting for his birthday party, anticipation makes the minutes drag like hours. However, it’s important to keep in mind that through the adoption process, most families are matched with a child within 12 months. This can be much sooner in certain situations, perhaps because of good timing or because you’re willing to adopt a child with special needs.

Those months can seem long when you’re waiting to meet your baby, but as you’ve surely experienced, overall, time goes very quickly. You might wait 12 months, but then the child will be a part of your family forever. When that happens, the following months and years will fly. It makes those first 12 months seem like nothing.

Your Life is About to Change

In a good way! But still, it will change when you bring your baby home. The time you spend waiting to adopt a baby is time you should also spend enjoying your life as it is now, because it will never be quite like this again. If you’re adopting with a partner, enjoy your time together as a couple. Work together to prepare your home for its tiny new resident. If you’re a single parent, spend time with friends or immerse yourself in your favorite hobbies. Life goes fast enough; let’s not rush ourselves through a single moment.

Today Could Be the Day

You never know when you’ll get notified of a match. As heart-wrenching as it can be to wait, it would be heartbreaking to think you were just a day or two away from being matched with your son or daughter when you decided to give up. Your match could be just around the corner!

You Want to Be a Parent

Your desire to adopt a child led you this far. It made you research to find the right adoption agency. It inspired you to put together a thoughtful, complete adoptive family profile. You devoted time and money to the effort; you may have also rearranged parts of your life or had to deal with friends or family members who didn’t understand your decision at first.

Your desire to adopt a child was powerful. If you feel like quitting, remember all the reasons that brought you here in the first place.

You’re going to be a wonderful parent.
